Hear, hear. It’s all about the sound at the Cinema Audio Society, and it is crystal clear.
The 60th CAS Awards honored those who create the absolute best sound in film and on television in ceremonies Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom, hosted by comedian Tom Papa.
“Oppenheimer” continued its nearly unbeatable awards season streak by taking the top prize for its sound mixing. It edged out the other nominees: “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”
But the first award presented during the evening was for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for Non-Theatrical Motion Pictures or Limited Series and that trophy went to “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.” Each of the recipients thanked their wives and that became a running joke throughout the night after Papa suggested that winners make a hand signal instead of thinking their spouses verbally.
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” won the award for animated motion pictures and “32 Sounds” won for documentary film, besting other lauded contenders including “Still: A Michael J Fox Movie,”“American Symphony” and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.”
“The Last of Us,” “The Bear” and “100 Foot Wave” were the winners in the limited series and television categories.
J.J. Abrams was honored with the Filmmaker Award and was introduced first by actor Jeff Garlin and then by fellow director Jon Favreau, who talked about Abrams’ mentorship and friendship and how they like to hang out with Guillermo Del Toro and paint models – monsters, robots and cars.
“I don’t think I deserve this but it’s a chance to express my profound gratitude for your work,” Abrams said in his acceptance speech. “I can’t name a more magical place than the mixing stage. Sound has always been my obsession. What I’ve learned is what you do is fucking hard, but you make it look easy.”
Long-time CAS member Joe Earle received the Career Achievement Award for his body of work which includes acclaimed television series like “Glee,” “Six Feet Under,” “Monk” “Pose,” “American Horror Story” and “Ugly Betty.”
He’ll be adding that to two previous CAS Awards and two Emmy Awards.
