The well-dressed, beautifully coiffed and artistically made-up crowd at the Beverly Hilton’s International Ballroom was buzzing with excitement as the 11th annual MUAHS Awards got underway Sunday night, cheering as a clip reel of nominated works for best make-up and hair styling played on large monitors.
Hosted by Melissa Peterman, who naturally thanked her glam squad right off the top, the awards voted on by the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) recognize the best in film, television, theater, commercials and music videos.
Although the ballroom tables were full, there was one notable absence. Oscar-nominated Nyad star Annette Bening, who was presented with the MUAHS Distinguished Artisan Award, was unable to be there to accept the honor because she was home in bed with Covid, and Warren [Beatty], according to the real Diana Nyad, the legendary swimmer whom Benng portrayed in the film.
Nyad called the event “the best party of the year” and shouted out Bening for being a bold, distinguished and unapologetic woman. She also joked that she was hoping to look more like Annette in real life, yet she cut an imposing figure with her short, spiky hair and beautifully tailored suit as she presented–and accepted–the honor to Bening. Nyad noted that Bening wanted to recognize her long-time make-up artist Julie Hewett, who also worked on the film, creating the intricate prosthetics for underwater scenes.
Martin Short was on hand to present his longtime Jiminy Glick collaborator Kevin Haney, whose credits include Driving Miss Daisy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Hocus Pocus 2, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. “You’re my Travis Kelce,” Short said to Haney.
As the boisterous ceremonies proceeded, Amazon MGM Studios’ Saltburn won two MUAHS Awards for best contemporary make-up and best contemporary hair styling. Netflix’s Maestro also scored a pair of honors for best period and/or character make-up and best special make-up effects.
Warner Bros.’ Barbie also won in the feature film categories, nabbing the trophy for best period and/or character hair styling.
In the television categories, winners included Netflix’s The Crown, HBO’s The Last of Us, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
