It was a banner day for HBO and HBO Max as together they racked up a whopping 140 Primetime Emmy nominations, including a scorecard-leading 25 for Succession, returning from its pandemic hiatus.
Two other shows were showered with 20 nominations each, Apple TV+’s comedy Ted Lasso in its sophomore season and HBO’s limited series, The White Lotus.
Among the streamers, Netflix once again led with the most nominations thanks in part to the history-making Squid Game. The global hit is the first non-English-language series to be nominated for best drama and also scored nominations for four of its actors.
In the acting categories, 26 people of color are among the 106 nominees with half of those coming from just three shows, Abbott Elementary, Squid Game and Ted Lasso.
But the most nominations for a single cast went to Succession, with a staggering 14 noms for lead, supporting and guest actors.
When you break it down by platform, streamers came away with 54%, cable had 32% and broadcast had 14% of the nominations.
Nine actors were honored with multiple nominations, some of which included writing, producing or directing: Jason Bateman, Quinta Brunson, Nicole Byer, Jerrod Carmichael, Julia Garner, Bill Hader, Rhea Seehorn, Sidney Sweeney and Zendaya.
There also a number of first-time nominees who seasoned as they may be, finally got the attention of the Television Academy, starting with the late Chadwick Boseman. Other Emmy nominees says up for statuettes are Jennifer Coolidge, Coleman Domingo, Elle Fanning, Melanie Lynskey, Barack Obama, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Christina Ricci and Tyler James Williams.
Yellowstone fans were no doubt disappointed to see that the paramount drama was completely shut out despite its huge audience.
The 74th Emmys will be presented Sept. 12 on NBC.
