Members of the Costume Designers Guild excitedly found their seats at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica as they gathered for their annual awards ceremony honoring the best in television, film and commercials.
You won’t find a better-dressed group of professionals in Hollywood than these folks, who clearly were in the mood for celebrating the 24th annual CDGAs Wednesday night, an event obviously put on hold last year because of the pandemic.
“Dune,” “Cruella” and “Coming 2 America” were the top film winners in ceremonies hosted by Casey Wilson and Andrew Runnels, both of whom star in Showtime’s comedy series “Black Monday.”
A running theme of the evening was the fight for pay equity for costume designers, who are often underpaid for their work.
The crowd cheered as Costume Designers Guild president Salvador Perez asked them to raise hot pink paddles stating “Pay Equity Now.” Pins with that slogan were also distributed to everyone at the show.
One of the evening’s many highlights was when actor Andrew Garfield was honored with the guild’s Spotlight Award.
It was presented to him by his “tick, tick… BOOM!” co-star Judith Light, who called him ‘extraordinary, infinitely talented and wildly generous.’ Garfield is Oscar-nominated for his role portraying playwright Jonathan Larson.
Her comments literally brought the actor, who this year also starred in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and reprised his character in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” to tears.
He called Light an angel on earth and wiped away tears as he said he was, ‘just so surprisingly overwhelmed and touched’ by receiving the honor.
Oscar best supporting actress nominee Aunjanue Ellis presented “King Richard” costume designer Sharen Davis with the career achievement award, speaking of their many collaborations before they worked together on the current film.
