“Licorice Pizza” is among the five films vying for BAFTA’s top honor

Some big surprises after the British Academy of Film and Television Arts unveiled its awards nominations for ceremony slated March 13 at Royal Albert Hall with Rebel Wilson hosting.

While it was expected that the James Bond movie “No Time to Die,” which grossed $131 million at the U.K. box office, would be in the leaderboard position in the nominations, that ranking instead went to “Dune,” with 11 nods. The Bond film earned just five.

Another awards season darling, Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” scored eight nominations, while Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” scored six.

This is only the second edition of the BAFTA Film Awards since the organization instituted a diversity review, following in the footsteps of the Motion Picture Academy, to increase and diversify its membership. (Currently, there are about 7,000 voting members.)

In the performance categories, 19 of the 24 nominees are receiving their first BAFTA film nomination. For directors, there’s an equal split between female and male directors — slightly down from last year, when four of six directors were female.
