The name of the film itself describes an ensemble, so it was only fitting that The Trial of the Chicago 7 took home the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night.
Among its award-winning cast: Sasha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Michael Keaton, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eddie Redmayne.
I know, I know. No women, but the film was about the men on trial for inciting riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
This year’s awards season darling, Nomadland, was ineligible as the majority of its cast were non-actors and therefore definitely non–SAG members.
The 27th annual SAG Awards made history by awarding each of its four top film acting awards to people of color.
The late Chadwick Boseman took the best actor trophy for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in what would be the last film he shot before his untimely death last year. Co-star Viola Davis also reigned as best lead actress in a motion picture.
The supporting actor
awards went to Judas and the Black Messiah’s
Daniel
Kaluuya, who played Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and Yuh-Jung Youn, the memorable grandmother of Minari.
The one-hour virtual show aired live on TBS and TNT.
