The Oscar nominations are out in what is probably the weirdest awards season in history, but all the buzz is not about the movie with the most nominations. That would be Mank, with 10, including best picture, a directing nod for David Fincher and recognition for stars Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried.
Joining Fincher on the directors list are two women, Chloe Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. That has NEVER happened before. You could probably count all the women ever nominated for an Academy Award for directing on one hand – and only one has ever taken the prize, Kathryn Bigelow. One, people, one!
For the record, Zhao and Fennell will also face off against Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung and Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round, the latter being rather a surprise nomination for which many thought the slot should’ve gone to Regina King.
Remember the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag? Well, it cannot be used this year—thankfully– as fully 9 of the 20 acting nominations for lead and supporting actor and actress went to people of color.
And within that group, Minari’s Steven Yeun makes history as the first Asian American to be nominated for best actor. His costar, Yuh-Jung Youn, who played the grandmother, also landed a supporting nomination.
The Sound of Metal’s Riz Ahmed becomes the first Pakistani and the first Muslim to be nominated in the lead actor category.
Two of the best supporting actor nominees, Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield, come from one of my favorite films of the year, Judas and the Black Messiah.
As expected, the late Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous not for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. That film’s lead actress Viola Davis also made Oscar history for receiving her fourth career acting nomination which makes her the most-nominated Black actress ever.
