It was a heady night at the Microsoft Theater for actress Rachel Brosnahan and Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as the freshman 1950s-set comedy series dominated the comedy categories by picking up five golden statuettes at the 70th Prime Emmy Awards, televised on NBC and hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost– known for their comedy on “Saturday Night Live.”
The tale of a woman finding her voice on a standup comedy stage in 1959 Greenwich Village also merited awards for costar Alex Bornstein and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who made history by winning for both her writing and directing of the series pilot, the first time a woman has taken home both prizes.
The ceremony also featured “Reparation Emmys” handed out by Che, who awarded African-American actors who didn’t get their due in years past, including Marla Gibbs, Tichina Arnold, Jimmie Walker and Jaleel White.
Another an expected moment was when Glenn Weiss used his acceptance speech for winning as director of the 2018 Oscars broadcast to propose to his intended on national television. She said yes.
One of the night’s expected big winners was “Game of Thrones,” which garnered a total of nine Emmys, making it the all-times series champ with 47 total statues over its run, which will complete with its final season next year.
Claire Foy was the queen of drama actresses, taking the statue for “The Crown” over contenders including Elisabeth Moss and Sandra Oh, who made history as the first Asian-American woman nominee in the category.
The star of another Netflix show, Regina King, earned the Emmy as lead actress in a limited series or movie for the somewhat under the radar “Seven Seconds.”
Bill Hader and Henry Winkler dominated with their wins for HBO’s comedy “Barry,” and Winkler received a standing ovation for his first ever Emmy awards.
