This year’s Emmy nominations may well be looked upon as an historic turning point for inclusion and for streamers. This is the first time that a streaming entity – okay, Netflix – has received the most nominations of any cable or broadcast network, in this case 122. That number surpasses the nods received by perennial leader HBO, with a still-bragworthy 108.
Yet placed in the context of Emmy history, it’s only been five years– yet billions of dollars in programming and marketing outlays– since Netflix first made its mark on television’s most prestigious awards competition.
Still, HBO landed atop the leaderboard with and most nominations for a single show, Game of Thrones with 22, followed by Westworld with 21. Not far behind, 20 nominations for last year’s big winner, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
In the marquee best drama category, Emmy voters also favored the second seasons of Stranger Things and This Is Us.
While her show did not get nominated for outstanding drama, Sandra Oh became the first Asian woman to be nominated for a lead actress Emmy for her role in Killing Eve.
On the comedy side, eight series are vying for the main prize, which has been taken the last three years by Veep, which was sidelined last season while Julia Louis Dreyfus underwent cancer treatment. (No worries, she and the show are coming back.)
New comedy series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a prime contender. Premiering after last year’s Emmy Awards, the 1950s-set show then swept the Golden Globes. Amongst it’s competition: Atlanta, HBO’s Barry and Glow.
SNL Weekend Update’s Michael Che and Collin Jost will host the Emmys on NBC live on September 17.
