Stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, and on screen and off screen couple who recently welcomed a baby boy, both got tapped–as did the show itself for best drama series.
But the competition will be more than brutal, as one of the other contenders in the marquee category is HBO’s powerhouse “Game of Thrones,” which garnered a record 23 nominations.
HBO, historically the leader in Emmy race, did not give up that slot. Far from it. The pay cabler brought in 94 nods– which is substantially fewer than last year’s haul of 126, but way ahead of the closest competitor, FX, with 56, shorn up by the performance of “The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”
For FX, which has had an increasingly strong Emmy showing over the past few years, the 56 nominations were a huge jump from last year’s 38.
And if there was ever any doubt that Netflix was a major player in this world, this time the streamer brought in 54 nods for its programming, including “House of Cards,” “the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Bloodline.” That’s 20 more slots than in 2015
On the broadcast side, NBC leads with 41 nominations, while both CBS and ABC have 35 apiece.
