In the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, it was only fitting that dozens of firefighters walked into Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar to as standing ovation that kicked off the 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards, hosted by Chelsea Handler.

After some jokes chiding the ongoing Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni scandal, the show got down to the business at hand: recognizing the absolute best in film and television over the past year.

There were a number of unexpected moments—including Anora winning the top prize of best picture– and some surprise guest presenters, including Jackie Chan and Sacha Baron Cohen.

There was exuberant celebration from the Wicked tables when director Jon M. Chu took the trophy for best director, as he was ignored by the Oscars and didn’t score a nomination there. He even joked from the stage, “I’m going to win that Oscar.”

The film acting awards had been predicted but there was no less joy for their recipients in winning them. The Brutalist star Adrien Brody won best actor; Demi Moore took best actress for her work in The Substance; Emilia Pérez actress Zoe Saldaña won best supporting actress and A Real Pain‘s Kieran Culkin, who wasn’t in attendance, took the prize for best supporting actor.

A Real Pain tied with Deadpool & Wolverine for Best Comedy.

Emilia Pérez took three trophies, including best international film and best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña, even as the Netflix film continues to deal with the fallout from star Karla Sofia Gascon’s incendiary tweets that were dug up by a reporter.

Along with Moore’s acting win, The Substance captured the awards for best original screenplay and best hair and makeup. The best adapted screenplay award went to Conclave, which also won for best acting ensemble.

In the TV categories, Shogun scored four awards, including best drama series, followed by Hacks, with three, including best comedy series. The limited series award went to Baby Reindeer.
