Beyoncé is now the most-nominated artist in Grammy history. Her 11 nods for the 67th Grammy Awards to be held Feb. 2 bring her career total to 99, zooming ahead of her husband Jay-Z, with whom she’d been tied at 88 nominations.
Her nominations include those in top categories like album of the year for “Cowboy Carter,” along with record and song of the year, for her chart-topping “Texas Hold ‘Em.
Perhaps this year, the Carter family will be able to celebrate her win for album of the year, a prize she’s never won, to Jay-Z’s great displeasure. “Cowboy Carter” was also ignored by the Country Music Association when it announced its nominations recently, raising questions about Nashville’s inclusivity of Black talent.
Taylor Swift has taken that marquee prize four times including for last year with “Midnights,” and this year she’s also a contender in the category with “The Tortured Poets Department” and for record and song of the year with “Fortnight,” her duet with Post Malone.
Billie Eilish also scored a nomination for album of the year with her “Hit Me Hard and Soft” and is also up for record and song of the year with “Birds of a Feather.”
Nominations day also brought kudos for newer talent including Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, making it a great year for female artists.
There were also some unexpected choices for album of the year like Andre 3000’s “New Blue Sun” in Jacob Collier’s “Djesse Vol.4.”
“You’re not excluded from consideration because you’re popular. But you’re also not excluded if you’re an artist that’s working in a genre other than one of the most popular genres,” said Recording Academy Chief Executive Harvey Mason Jr. “I’m gratified that there’s room for all different forms of music-making and creativity.”
For best new artist, Roan and Carpenter are up against Khruangbin, Benson Boone, Doechii, Teddy Swims, Shaboozey and Raye.
The full Grammy ballot runs to 94 categories, including audiobook, narration and storytelling recording.
