It was no surprise that Shogun was awarded best drama series at the 76th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards. After all, the FX series dominated the proceedings with a total of 18 the statuettes from the Creative Arts ceremonies last weekend and the broadcast show on ABC Sunday night.
What was a big surprise is Hacks taking the prize for best comedy series after FX’s The Bear, it’s other big awards magnet and a top comedy contender, had already cooked up 11 trophies.
Still the night did belong to FX and its Disney family streamers siblings which walked away with a record number of Emmy awards, far outdistancing Netflix and HBO/Max.
And in a situation that may never happen again, the ceremonies hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy were the second time this year that Hollywood gathered to honor television’s finest. The 2023 ceremonies were delayed until January of this year by the WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes, so we had two Emmy Awards shows in the space of nine months– with many of the same winners—like The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who once again won lead actor and supporting actor in a comedy.
Their co-star, Liza Colón-Zayas won her first Emmy in the supporting actress race, making history as the first Latina to win in that comedy category.
Netflix’s hit Baby Reindeer won outstanding limited series or anthology, with creator Richard Gadd taking home trophies for lead actor and writing. His co-star Jessica Gunning, who played his stalker Martha, won supporting actress.
As predicted, Jodie Foster added another trophy to her mantle by winning the first Emmy of her career with her starring role in HBO’s True Detective: Night Country.
