Nomination day for the Emmy Awards dawned bright and warm, but the people at FX couldn’t have known how close to the sun they would be flying.
Despite its decades-long history of groundbreaking programming dating back to The Shield, Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me, FX has always been an Emmy also-ran to HBO and Netflix.
And although Netflix was officially on top of the leaderboard – and HBO third – FX came charging in with a stunning 25 nominations for its limited series Shogun and a record-breaking 23 nominations for its comedy series The Bear, racking up 93 noms altogether. That included first-time noms for its critically lauded but Emmy-overlooked until now, after it’s over, Reservation Dogs. Also, Selena Gomez landed her first-ever acting nomination for the popular series Only Murders in the Building, which scored a host of other nods including for costars Steve Martin and Martin Short.
Because of the eligibility calendar, The Bear’s nominations are for its second season, although the third is currently airing. Series stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce and Liza Colón-Zayas all received acting nods.
For HBO and Max, to come in third in the nomination totals reflected the fact that a number of its acclaimed series has ended and due to strike delays, others, like House of the Dragon, had not yet started in time for consideration.
Among Netflix s 107 total nods were 11 for probably the buzziest series of the season, Baby Reindeer, including for lead actor and creator Richard Gadd.
Fellow streamer Apple TV + also had a lot to crow about, including nods for The Morning Show, Lessons in Chemistry and Palm Royale.
The 76th annual Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC September 15 at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET from downtown Los Angeles. A host has yet to be named.
