‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Succession’ Reign at SAG Awards

The 30th annual SAG Awards were notable for a number of reasons in addition to the fact that they are an extremely reliable indicator of which actors will take home statuettes at the Oscars on March 10.

For the first time ever, the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards were live-streamed on Netflix, exponentially increasing the global reach and impact of the ceremonies, which were hosted by Idris Elba on Saturday night.

As award shows have generally been declining in television ratings over these past few years, this could signal a major change in how the public views these events.

For the industry, the SAG Awards are the last major awards show before the Academy Awards and they signify the likely winners in the acting categories.

With all the other guild and critics groups’ decisions now in the books, two high-profile races have come down to two-person contests. In the lead acting category it’s Cillian Murphy versus Paul Giamatti. In the leading actress category, it is Lily Gladstone against Emma Stone.

SAG anointed Murphy and Gladstone even as Giamatti and Stone have taken home a number of other trophies along the campaign trail.

Robert Downey, Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph appear to be locks in the supporting acting categories

And clearly, Oppenheimer is the film to beat for best picture, with its cast taking home the top film award.

On the TV side, it was no surprise that the acting ensemble of Succession was awarded the drama series prize, as it has pretty much hoovered up every other available award for its final, highly acclaimed season on HBO.

Yet Succession’s lead drama actor Kieran Culkin was bested by Pedro Pascal, star of HBO’s The Last of Us, who boasted during his acceptance speech that he was drunk because he never thought he’d be taking a walk to the podium.

Barbra Streisand, already one of the less than 20 EGOT winners on the planet, was the recipient of SAG’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In her moving acceptance speech, in which she pleaded for an end to hate in the world she also reflected on her earliest roles and the influence of “her first crush” Marlon Brando and others from “that make-believe world. I didn’t like reality — I wanted to be in movies,” she said. “Somehow, some way, it all came true.”
