It was a royally fantastic night Sunday in London for Oppenheimer at the BAFTA Film Awards. The biographical thriller about the making of the atomic bomb scored Best Film, Director for Christopher Nolan, Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Editing (Jennifer Lame), Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema) and Original Score (Ludwig Goransson).
Next on the leader board, with five trophies, was Searchlight’s Poor Things including Leading Actress for Emma Stone as well as Costume, Make Up & Hair, Production Design and Special Visual Effects.
From Focus, The Holdovers won two categories: Supporting Actress for Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Casting.
Shut out of any trophies were Killers of the Flower Moon which had nine nominations coming into the night, Bradley Cooper’s Netflix entry Maestro which had seven, and the biggest box office movie of 2023, Warner Bros and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
Among the evening’s highlights, Michael J. Fox presenting Best Film to a standing ovation from the starry crowd, which included Prince William and a number of nominees who flew across the pond for the ceremonies.
