For everyone nominated and especially for those who won, it was worth the wait for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards which had originally been scheduled for September 2023 before their strike-altered date of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15.
Ably hosted by Anthony Anderson, with help from his mother who made sure the acceptance speeches didn’t run over time, the ceremonies paid tribute to the history of television by bringing together a number of classic TV ensembles including those for Martin, Cheers, Ally McBeal, Grey’s Anatomy and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Tracey Ellis Ross and Natasha Lyonne reenacted the famous Lucy and Ethel comedy sketch on the chocolate factory line.
But the night belonged to HBO’s Succession which led the pack with 27 nominations for its acclaimed final season. No surprise that it captured the award for best drama series along with trophies for lead actress Sarah Snook, lead actor Kieran Culkin, supporting actor Matthew McFadyen and and writer (and showrunner) Jesse Armstrong.
FX’s series The Bear, nominated for its freshman season but having already aired its second season, was also dominant throughout the night as it was crowned best comedy series. It picked up five other awards including for lead actor Jeremy Allen White, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach and supporting actress Ayo Edebiri.
Netflix’s limited road rage drama Beef was also a big winner, scoring the limited or anthology series category trophy along with hardware for lead actress Allie Wong, lead actor Steven Yeun and writer and director Lee Sung Jin.
The ceremonies will also be remembered for making Elton John an EGOT, the 19th person to win all four major entertainment industry awards, the Emmy, the Grammy, the Oscar and the Tony.
