Andra Day performs her iconic “Rise Up,” the theme of the 2023 Los Angeles Builders Ball

There could not have been a more fitting featured performer at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles’ 2023 Builders Ball than Grammy award-winning Andra Day, known for her inspirational song “Rise Up.”

That was the theme of the event at the Beverly Hilton March 8, presented by City National Bank to celebrate the commitment of people and companies who are transforming the landscape of Los Angeles by building affordable housing throughout the LA basin. That mission serves to empower families and create strength and stability through home ownership.

The gala evening provided a huge boost to those ongoing efforts by raising $925,000 through donations and a live auction conducted in the iconic International Ballroom of the hotel, which was filled with people who passionately support Habitat’s vision.

That passion was evident in the room from the very beginning when guests were welcomed by City National’s Linda Dunthorpe and Habitat LA’s President and CEO Erin Rank.

The Property Brothers receive the Dream Builder honor

The excitement grew as the night’s honorees were recognized. Drew and Jonathan Scott, known as the Property Brothers, received the Dream Builder recognition for distinguishing themselves through a commitment to community revitalization and investment.

“We are always excited to continue our work as Habitat Humanitarians in the Greater Los Angeles area and beyond,” said Jonathan Scott.

Added Jonathan Scott, “It is truly thrilling and there is no better feeling than to see a Habitat family turn the key and open the door to their new forever home.”

Mattel was honored as the Foundation Builder, an award that recognizes a company or person that has made a transformational impact through advocacy work and leadership in spearheading intentional change in communities with a commitment to a legacy of economic growth.

The Builder of the Year honor went to the Whiting-Turner contracting company, whose contributions demonstrate creativity and innovation.

Throughout the evening, President Jimmy Carter was mentioned as an inspirational force for his long-time work with Habitat for Humanity. Photos of him at work in a hard hat were shown on monitors set up in the ballroom and received enthusiastic applause.

The highlight of the evening came when Day took the stage. The singer, songwriter and actress won a Golden Globe award for her portrayal of the legendary Billie Holiday in the 2020 film “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and also earned an Oscar best actress nomination for the role.

“I’ve been blessed with so many opportunities to tell stories and connect with global communities through the connective bridge of music,” she said before her performance. “Now, I’m grateful to connect with Habitat LA, and bring the stirring ‘Rise Up’ spirit to their amazing annual celebration.”

Day’s lengthy set culminated with her stirring song, earning a standing ovation from the crowd.

But the night wasn’t over yet. There was a festive afterparty with music, cocktails and a photo booth for guests. On the way out, they were given gift bags which—you guessed it – contained Barbie dolls from Mattel.
