The German World War I movie “All Quiet on the Western Front” was the big winner at the BAFTAs held Sunday night at London’s Royal Festival Hall, walking away with seven statuettes including best film and best director. It had received a whopping 14 nominations.
The excitement surrounding the event –Britain’s equivalent of the Academy Awards – started with the arrival of Prince William, who has chaired the BAFTAs since 2010 and his wife, Princess Catherine.
She made headlines by re-wearing and adapting the design of an Alexander McQueen white gown she had worn to the same event in 2019, pairing it with above the elbow black opera gloves. She also was seen patting her husband’s behind as they walked into the venue.
William became emotional as he listened to Dame Helen Mirren’s tribute to his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, who was a big supporter of the UK’s film and television industries.
“The Banshees of Inisherin,” which had scored 10 nominations, was also a big winner. It received the best British film award and both of its supporting actors, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan took the trophies in their respective categories. It also won best original screenplay for Martin McDonagh, who also directed the film, set on an Irish island in 1923.
Although the film’s star Colin Farrell had been favored to win in the best actor category, that prize went to Austin Butler, who portrayed Elvis Presley in “Elvis.”
As expected, Cate Blanchett was victorious in the best actress contest for her role in “TÁR.”
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which had scored 10 nominations and is a favorite heading into next month’s Oscars, was largely snubbed on Sunday, taking home only the award for best editing.
