The Emmy Awards are back, baby – back to where they were in 2019 before the pandemic hit–with a full-fledged ceremony and a slew of pre-and post-parties to celebrate television’s biggest night.
And just like the old days, HBO pulled off a sweep of nearly all of the marquee categories. I mean, how could they not with “Succession” alone reaping 25 nominations? “The White Lotus” itself accounted for ten of HBO’s haul of 38 Emmys.
There was once in recent years that Netflix beat HBO in the total statuette tally. It of course includes the Creative Arts Emmys that are handed out a week before the prime time ceremony, broadcast this time on NBC (and Peacock) on Monday night so as not to interfere with Sunday football.
But the 74th Emmys marked a return to form for the premium cabler, which has added HBO Max to its stable, soon to combine with Discovery+,a union that does seem a bit like oil and water combining.
Back to the ceremonies, ably hosted by long time “Saturday Night Live” and sitcom star Kenan Thompson, his first time as emcee. Were there Will Smith jokes? Um, not really, unless you count his comment to Regina Hall that she was brave in attending.
There were some extremely noteworthy and even historic wins as let’s be real, the Emmys are a game of repetition. Witness the fact that “Ted Lasso” scored again as best comedy series and “Succession” nailed it again as outstanding drama series. Zendaya was also a repeat – a welcome one – by winning best actress in a drama series for her role on HBO’s “Euphoria.”
Here are some other repeats: Julia Garner for “Ozark,” her third, Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein for “Ted Lasso,” each scoring their second statuette and the same for Jean Smart of “Hacks.”
But when it came to best actor in a drama series, that went to Lee Jung-jae of Netflix’s “Squid Game,” making him the first winner in that category to come from a non-English language program. He prevailed over a stellar field of competition in Bob Odenkirk, Jason Bateman, Jeremy Strong, Adam Scott and Brian Cox.
Netflix scored 26 Emmys with the hugely popular “Squid Game” accounting for six of them, tying the number of statuettes awarded to “Euphoria.”
As we move deeper into the streaming era, replete with its cutbacks and consolidations one thing is for sure in the foreseeable future: Netflix and HBO/HBO Max will not take their respective feet off the gas in their quest to win more accolades– and trounce the competition.
