“CODA” screenwriter (and director) Siân Heder cemented her film’s status as an awards season frontrunner when she took the Writers Guild of America’s coveted prize as best adapted screenplay.
It was the first award presented in virtual ceremonies held Sunday night and hosted by Ashley Nicole Black, the night after “CODA” won best picture at the Producers Guild Awards. Its screenplay also took the BAFTA last weekend.
Normally, the WGA Awards take place simultaneously in person on both the East and West coasts, but being held virtually didn’t diminish the stature of the trophies handed out for the best writing in film, television, digital, radio, promo and news.
The other major film award, best original screenplay, went to Adam McKay for his satirical end of the world Netflix film, “Don’t Look Up.”
HBO’s “Hacks” scored a double win for both comedy series and new series, the same double-play that “Ted Lasso” scored last year.
“Succession” was also a double winner, taking drama series and episodic drama trophies.
Another double winner was CBS’s “60 Minutes.”
Hulu’s “The Great” took the episodic comedy prize and “Conan,” in its last season, won for comedy/variety talk series in its last chance of scoring the award.
Honorary awards were presented to Barry Jenkins and Dick Cavett.
