Coming 2 America took three trophies at the MUAHS Awards

First, let us just say how GREAT it was to be back at the Beverly Hilton for an awards show that was almost normal for the first time in two years!

Thank you, Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Guild (Local 706) for having the tools to move forward in person with your ninth annual award show, despite the COVID-19 protocols necessary– and welcomed– for the event.

Those protocols precluded having the typical boozy and schmoozy cocktail hour in the carpeted lobby area of the hotel’s iconic International Ballroom, the preferred location for many of the entertainment industry’s most prestigious ceremonies.

Instead, guests and red carpet walkers went straight to their dinner tables where a delicious meal was served by the always-professional waitstaff who were clearly happy to see a return to normalcy in the room.

Actress and comedian Melissa Peterson got the festivities started with her energetic hosting as awards honoring the best makeup and hairstyling in movies, TV, commercials and live theater in 23 categories got underway.

On the feature film side, Coming 2 America topped the trophy list with three awards, making it the front runner in the crafts categories for the Oscars.

The Amazon Studios sequel starring Eddie Murphy won for Best Contemporary Make-Up, Best Special Make-Up Effects and Best Contemporary Hair Styling.

Amazon also scored with Being the Ricardos for Best Period Hair Styling and/or Character Hair Styling, while Disney’s Cruella took the prize for Best Period and/or Character Make-Up.

In the television categories, NBC’s Saturday Night Live was also a multiple winner with three trophies for Best Period and/or Character Make-Up, Best Special Make-up Effects and Best Contemporary Make-Up.

Double winners were The Kelly Clarkson Show (Daytime Television), Nickelodeon’s Danger Force (Children and Teen Television Programming) and Cinderella (La Cenerentola) (Theatrical Productions – Live Stage) with each scoring both the make-up and hair styling awards in their respective categories.

No award show would be complete without honorary awards.

Christina Smith received the Vanguard Award, presented by Milla Jovovich. Director Jon Favreau wasn’t there in person but virtually received the IATSE Local 706’s Distinguished Artisan Award, and makeup artist Michèle Burke and hairstylist Joy Zapata were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards by presenters Paula Wagner and Lauren Schuler Donner, respectively.

And of course the evening wouldn’t have been complete without a gift bag for attendees, naturally filled with makeup and hairstyling products.
