With three of its films nominated in the group of 10 motion pictures competing for the marquee prize, at Netflix dominated the Producers Guild of America nominations just announced for the upcoming PGA Awards.
“Don’t Look Up” from Adam McKay, “The Power of the Dog” from Jane Campion and “Tick, Tick … Boom!” from Lin-Manuel Miranda all made the cut.
In fact, streamers ruled more of the roost as well with “CODA’ from Apple TV+ and “Being the Ricardos” on Amazon.
Warner Bros. captured two nominations for the title of what is in essence best picture, Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures: “Dune” from Denis Villeneuve and “King Richard” from Reinaldo Marcus Green.
The PGA, of all the showbiz industry guilds has recognized popular blockbusters over the years but this year the biggest of them all, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” didn’t make it into the top ten, nor did “No Time to Die,” and “House of Gucci.”
The well-received “The Tragedy of Macbeth” also was left off the list, somewhat minimizing its chances to be included in the Academy Award nominees for best picture, which will be revealed February 8
Yet, the producers guild has predicted 94 of the 106 (89%) of the Oscar Best Picture nominees over the past 12 years. In the 32-year history of the awards, its pick for best pic has gone on to take home the top Academy Award a whopping 22 times.
