Even as real world events involving the royal family were unfolding on Sunday night, the fictionalized version of Great Britain’s Windsor dynasty – the fourth season of Netflix’s The Crown– was reaping the rewards at the 26th Annual Critics Choice Awards.
The series, which depicted the romance, marriage and breakup of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, took four trophies including Best Drama, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Josh O’Connor as Charles, Best Actress in a Drama Series for Emma Corrin as Diana, and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Gillian Anderson who portrayed British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Also taking four statuettes and topping the night on the film side was Nomadland, cementing its front runner status in this ongoing awards season.
The film, starring Oscar-winner Frances McDormand, won for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay for Chloé Zhao and Best Cinematography for Joshua James Richards.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” also received much love from the critics, winning three trophies including Best Actor for the late Chadwick Boseman, Best Costume Design and Best Hair and Makeup.
Promising Young Woman star Carey Mulligan was awarded Best Actress for her role in the dark comedy, which also earned a Best Original Screenplay win for Emerald Fennell, who had also directed the film.
Best Supporting Actor went to Daniel Kaluuya for portraying Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah and Best Supporting Actress to Maria Bakalova for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
Although the latter movie was a favorite in the best comedy category that trophy was taken by Palm Springs, the Groundhog Day-style caper toplined by Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti.
The ceremonies were broadcast on the CW network and hosted for the third consecutive year by Taye Diggs. Another highlight of the evening was the See Her Award, presented to Zendaya.
