Even an unseasonable rain storm could not dampen the spirit of celebration at the Television Academy’s Costume Design Nominee Reception, held just two days after the nominations were announced for the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards.
And there couldn’t have been a more, well, fitting location than the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in downtown Los Angeles, which provided an exclusive preview of an exhibition featuring costumes from more than 20 television shows.
Guests crowded onto the portico to enjoy a bountiful buffet before the nominees in costume design categories were presented with their certificates. Among them were Ivy Heather Thaide (Assistant Costume Designer, The Mindy Project), Jenny Eagan (Costume Designer, Olive Kitteridge), Lisa Padovani (Costume Designer, Gotham), Lou Eyrich (Costume Designer, American Horror Story), Marie Schley (Costume Designer, Transparent) and Salvador Perez (Costume Designer, The Mindy Project).
After the ceremony, attendees toured the gallery space for the Ninth Annual Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design exhibit, organized and curated by noted costume designer Mary Rose.
On display were stunning costumes on life-size mannequins from programs including Bessie, Better Call Saul, Gotham, Marvel’s Agent Carter, Olive Kitteridge, The Knick, Once Upon A Time, Peter Pan Live!, Ray Donovan, Reign and Wolf Hall.
There were photo ops aplenty as attendees posed with groups of costumes from shows across the spectrum from contemporary to fantasy to historical dramas.
Also on display in an adjoining gallery were beautifully preserved items of clothing from the Helen Larson Historic Costume Collection, including gorgeous gowns that belonged to Queens Victoria, Alexandra and Mary of England.
The reception was hosted by Television Academy Peer Group Governors Sue Bub and Terry Ann Gordon and the FIDM Museum.
Additional attendees included special guests Alonzo Wilson (Costume Designer, Manhattan), Bruce Rosenblum (Television Academy Chairman and CEO), Christopher Lawrence (Costume Designer, Ray Donovan), Clark Gregg (Actor, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Eduardo Castro (Costume Designer, One Upon a Time) Elizabeth Henstridge (Actress, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Ellen Mirojnick (Costume Designer, The Knick), Giovanna Ottobre-Melton (Costume Designer, Marvel’s Agent Carter), Janet Montgomery (Actress, Salem) Jennifer Bryan (Costume Designer, Better Call Saul), Joseph Porro (Costume Designer, Salem & The Lizzie Borden Chronicles), Maury McIntyre (Television Academy President & COO), Nick Verreos (FIDM Spokesperson/Fashion Designer) and Simon Kassianides (Actor, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
