The East-West Footwear Toe-Down

For designer Nick Brown, a tall, lanky New Zealander transplanted to New York, it was just too much of a stretch to wear sandals all summer. You might say he got flip-flop fatigue. So he took centuries of Mediterranean tradition and created espadrilles with an eco-friendly woven jute sole and a cotton upper in fun colors and striped patterns, like bold black and white and blue pinstripes. Evoking the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard over Malibu and Newport Beach, Soludos–the name was chosen to mean “cheers to the summer” are fashionable and unexpectedly comfortable on sand, cement and asphalt–or wherever your feet may take you.  Styles range from $24-28 for both men and women at retailers including Ron Herman, Steven Alan, Madison, Post 26, Douglas Fir and shopbop.com.
